Bearing down

As the end of a goal approaches, I find two things competing for my attention. One is the strong desire to be finished, to get to the end. The other is the equally strong desire to start something else.

In my present case, the goal I’m nearing is the completion of a first draft of a screenplay. First draft means one thing: the beginning of more work. Revisions.

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve put aside several other goals and projects in order to focus on screenwriting. Occasionally, I get sidetracked, such as when I started redesigning my blog. I got the main design framework finished and then shelved it. I knew the rest of the coding and design would take me too far away from my main project.

Staying focused on one thing causes me difficulty. I’m always coming up with new ideas for sites, businesses, scripts, etc. I’m great at starting something but have difficulty staying focused until it’s finished.

In high school, I took three years of drafting. Next, I got a certificate degree in graphic art. My B.A. is philosophy. And I have a master’s degree in urban planning. That all explains why I currently work fulltime as a corporate communicator and my main hobby is screenwriting.

Somewhere out there is the perfect job for someone like me. I just haven’t figured out what it is yet.

Lost is the new me

The biggest problem in this era of Web 2.0 is keeping track of the latest cool applications that you have to be using if you’re even half as cool as me.

Case in point: 30 Boxes. I was a few days late to the sign up, which already puts me way back in the line, far enough so that I might not even get a seat. I’ll have to stand by the exit, getting in everyone’s way.

I’ve signed up for at least three other groundbreaking Web 2.0 apps that are going to revolutionize social bookmarking, instant messaging, and monkey-out-of-butt flying, but I can’t even remember them all. I’ve certainly forgotten to bookmark them in delicious, which is probably already past its prime. What’s that new social bookmarking service that others have beta tested? All I can remember is Tom Cruise.

If found is the new search, then lost is the new me.
