Taking a walk on an autumn evening reminds me of going back to school, specifically when I was taking night classes at Palomar Community College in 1987 while working full-time at Transworld Skateboarding Magazine. I also had a full load of classes: creative writing, philosophy, history. Ahhh, the headiness of those evening walks after class.
I realized that since the birth of my daughter over four years ago, I no longer take enough walks. I’ve always been a walking enthusiast, even serving on the City of Portland’s Pedestrian Advisory Committee years ago. When I have extra time on my hands, I tend to gravitate toward the computer. I’m changing that habit pronto.
I am weening myself from the need to consume content in order to fill time. Twenty years ago, I subscribed to three magazines (The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and Harper’s), didn’t watch TV nor listen to the radio, and read books. That left plenty of time for other pursuits.
Now I read online news and blogs, listen to podcasts, read and listen to books, watch DVDs, and have the usual load of email, Twitter, etc. I want the magazines as well, but only have a subscription to Creative Screenwriting these days. With the addition of a child, my free time fits in an Altoid tin, with room to spare.
I miss having long conversations with myself while out on a evening stroll. I enjoy my own company, even on the times when we disagree. Whenever I have a free moment, instead of reaching for a computer or iPod, I’m heading for the door, taking with me only my thoughts (if I have any of my own left).
